What’s a Museyroom?

Museyroom is the blog of Michael Powers. The name comes from James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake:

This the way to the museyroom. Mind your hats goan in! Now yiz are in the Willingdone Museyroom. (page 8, lines 9–10)

Museyroom is a portmanteau word that suggests musings, museum, the French word musée, or musing-room. Although you won’t find much about Joyce here, museyroom makes a good, all-purpose blog title for a former—recovering?—Joycean.

Who’s Michael Powers?

I’m Interim Director of Communications at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. I used to be an English professor and even published on James Joyce. For a long time, going back to the mid-90s, I led a double life, half about the web and half about literature. Eventually the web won out.

A native New Jerseyite and former California resident, I now reside with my family in Indiana, Pennsylvania. No, that’s not a mistake. You can look it up: the town of Indiana, in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Both Jimmy Stewart and Edward Abbey were born here.

I’m also a saxophonist and a member of the Dad Band, the preeminent charity jazz quintet of Indiana County, Pennsylvania. And I’m one of the people behind the Indiana Foundation for Education.

I’m on Twitter and LinkedIn. If you’re interested, go ahead and contact me there. I’m also on Facebook, but unless I’ve known you for a while, and outside of work, I’ll probably turn down your friend request. I’m just not ready for the end of the Age of Privacy yet.

What Gets Published Here?

From time to time, I want to publish things that are longer than a tweet yet not really an article. You’ll find them here. These days, these things are mostly about making websites for higher education. I’ll also post some projects I’ve been working on.
